EU trade policy amid the US-China clash: Caught in the cross-fire?

9. Juli 2019, 08:00 - 10:00

Discussion with

• Anabel González, Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, Washington D.C.

• Jean-Luc Demarty, adviser responsible for multilateralism, WTO reform and adviser on trade negotiations with the U.S. in the Secretariat-General,European Commission

• Guntram B. Wolff, Director of Bruegel

At our event, Anabel González will present the study “EU trade policy amid the US-China clash: caught in the cross-fire” that she wrote together with Nicolas Veron. Both are non-Resident Senior Fellows at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington, D.C. The study examines the trade war between the United States and China and the possible consequences for the EU. In this situation, Europe must develop an effective trade policy strategy to defend trade multilateralism and its own interest. The study takes a closer look at risks the EU is facing with regard to China’s strategic aims in trade policy and how to respond. How should the EU deal with the US effort to isolate China? How should the EU move forward with reform of the World Trade Organisation? What can practitioners learn from this study?

We want to discuss the study together with experts from the EU institutions and the Brussels-based economic think-tank Bruegel.
