At this webinar we will discuss the various implications of China’s drive for greater economic self-sufficiency or even decoupling for the EU and the US. Over the last decade, China has consistently taken steps to reorient its economy, in order to be less dependent on foreign exports and foreign technology imports. It has put in place ambitious industrial and technology blueprints, such as Made in China 2025 and China Standards 2035, which aim to transform China into a leading industrial and technological power in a number of emerging fields. These initiatives intensified trade and technology competition between China, the US and the EU and created uncertainty in various supply chains. Furthermore, in May 2020, the Chinese leadership announced a “dual circulation” strategy, ostensibly aimed at reducing dependence on overseas markets and technology, a trend that is being watched with concern by business representatives.
